1 Ishavasya Upanishad begins:

The Upanishads are a portion of the Vedas. We have 4 Vedas -Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva. In the Vedas are found lots of Upanishads generally in the end portions of the Vedas but they are also found in the beginning and middle portion of the Vedas. For example, Ishavasya Upanishad is found in the beginning portion of the Veda.
What are the Vedas? Ved means knowledge. Vedas give the knowledge of dharma and of Brahma. Dharma gives our karma, what type of karma we should do? What are our duties? What will we gain through karmas? If we want to go somewhere even after our death (or attain some lokas), what should we do. These are all revealed in the Vedas. But the Vedas also reveal the knowledge of our own Self.

Vedas reveal Atma Vidhya also known as Brahma Vidya. The karmas are revealed in earlier portions of the Vedas known as karma kanda and Brahma Vidya is revealed in later portions – jnana
Vedas are classified into four.
1. Mantras or Samhitas.
2. Brahmanas. More about yagnas to please these devatas, to worship these devatas.
3. Aranyakas

When we lead our life as a brahmachari we should learn the Vedas, as a grihasti, we should do all the rituals and follow the guidance of the Vedas that will purify our antakaranas and then we can withdraw on our active life and focus on our doing upasanas – this is the vanaprastha ashram. This is where husband and wife do upasanas together and focus attention of our mind on that Brahma. Those upasanas are explained in the Aranyaka portion of the Vedas.
By studying the mantras, we develop an understanding of the devatas, develop the love for them. Through Brahmanas, we worship them and further purify our antakaranas. Thereafter we do upasanas to tune ourselves with that Brahma who alone is expressing as these Devatas (Vaishwanara Upasana, Hiranyagarbha Upasana) and then we drop all upasanas and meditate on that Brahma and gain enlightenment, that is sannyasa, that is dropping all other agendas and pursuing the path of gaining enlightenment by gaining the knowledge of Brahma.

Knowledge of Brahma is revealed in the last portion of the Vedas called the Upanishads. Since they are generally the end portion of the Vedas, they are also called anta (last portion) of the Vedas, so Vedanta. We have to follow all 4 in our life. As a brahmachari, we should understand the devatas, worship them, develop a rapport with them, develop love for them. As a grihasti, we should worship, follow all guidance of the scriptures, follow the path of dharma, As a vanaprasti , we should meditate, do upasana and as sannyasi, we should gain that knowledge and become free of this samsara. Therefore, the guidance for our journey in our life is given in the Vedas, hence the importance of the Vedas.
Who have written these Vedas? When were they written? In what periods? These are questions sometimes asked by people. The Vedas are anaadi, ananta and apaurusheya. Anaadi means beginningless, either manifest or unmanifest just like the world. When the world becomes manifest, it is called shrishti, when it is manifest, it is called stithi and finally it dissolves back and becomes unmanifest, this is called pralaya.
Same are the Vedas, they are born with the world, stay manifest and then get dissolved with the world. In the different periods, the history when human evolution happened on Earth or other planets, through some great jivas (Rishis), the Vedas are again expressed. The Rishis are not the authors of the Vedas, they just get expressed. Just like in present time, in the Kali Yuga we evolved to become human beings.
In this Yuga and previous Yugas also, great Masters were born. Some were born with the knowledge of the Vedas and some got the blessing of Ishwara and through his blessings, the knowledge was revealed to them. But, they are not the authors of the Vedas but dhristhas (seers) of the mantras of the Vedas. So Vedas are anadi, ananta and apaurusheya. Ananta means infinite. Apaurusheya – not man made.
Generally, people talk about authors of the Vedas and give the name of some rishi munis. Generally, Western scholars want to do research and keep arriving at different time periods. Some say Vedas were written some 15,000 years ago; some say 10,000; some try to bring the period closer and closer. But, traditionally we know the Vedas are not written by human beings – no human authors, hence apaurusheya. Who wrote Ramayana?
We know the author is Valmiki, that is known and the knowledge that Valmiki wrote is also available. Similarly, when we talk about Mahabharata, we do know Veda Vyasa wrote it. MB was written about 5000 years ago, from the Kaurava period. Ramayana was much before when Bhagwan took avatar as Sri Rama. Even in the Ramayana, it is mentioned that the Vedas are anadi, ananta and apaurusheya. We know the authors of Ramayana, MB, Yoga Sutras, grammar but there are no authors for the Vedas.

Another fascinating thing about the Vedas is that they are all mantras, and all the entire Vedas can be sung. In fact, printing the Vedas happen in recent times but Vedas were never written, they were just heard from the teacher, learnt by heart, and taught to the students. The writing and printing of the Vedas only happened when printing and writing came in history. So, the beauty of the Veda is, that when it is chanted, it is chanted in a particular swara. The entire Veda is set to tune in the sapta swaras. Even now if somebody is chanting Purusha Suktam, they will chant in the same swaras. If they are chanting some other sections of the Vedas in any part of India, they will chant in the same swara which is fixed and cannot be changed. If human beings had written the Vedas, by now we would have changed the tune. People keep changing tunes according to their fancy, but the Vedas’ tune are fixed.
The Vedas are infinite and vast. It is not possible for any person to write such a vast literature; it is humanly impossible. There are some people who say Vedas are written by different authors in different times. In the beginning some wrote mantras and then evolved and developed the Brahmanas etc. This is a wrong understanding. If we say that many authors have written the Vedas, anything which is written by many people will not have consistency, oneness in their approach; they will differ in their views. Even now, people who have written commentaries on the Upanishads or Bhagavad Gita, every commentary is different because their views are different. Therefore, if many people have written the Vedas, there will not be any uniformity, but this is not the case. The Vedas talk in one language. Whatever is conveyed in the Vedas is consistent.
In order to understand the Vedas, the previous portions (mantras, brahmanas and aranyakas portions) – to understand them properly, Jaimini, a great disciple of Veda Vyasa has written Jaimini sutras which help us to understand the previous portions of the Vedas and from these sutras we come to know there is consistency. It is as though one person has written the whole things. There is consistency.
UDUPI SRI KRISHNA TEMPLE
To understand the Upanishads, the fact that there is consistency and no difference of opinions, conveying one message, Veda Vyasa ji wrote Brahma Sutras. There are 555 sutras which teaches us the main themes of the Upanishads and how it is giving one message.
Thus there are no authors of the Vedas; they are anadi, ananta and apaurusheya. They convey many things that were not even known to human beings till recently. The Vedas talk about the 7 continents, the moon, sun and stars and so many phenomena which were hardly known to human beings till recently. Then we realise it is mentioned in the Vedas. So, it is not the work of human beings. Vedas are expressions of that Brahman. Just as the world is the expression of Brahman, Vedas are also the expressions of Brahman. If we sincerely follow the 4 parts of the Vedas, they will lead us to moksha. The mantra, brahmana and Aranyaka portions gives the chitta shuddhi or chitta ekagrata and prepare us for jnana. Upanishads give us Brahma Vidya and take us to moksha.
There are many Upanishads but many of them have become extinct in the present time. As we approach Kali Yuga, the Vedas and Upanishads start to disappear because the adhikaris become less and less – people will get converted, have different views and opinions, crazy ideas, lose faith, lose their sincerity, and will not have the ability to think and understand. As we go further in Kali Yuga, lots of things will get extinct and in the midst of Kali Yuga, the whole Vedas will disappear for some time and in Satya Yuga, it will get manifest. This goes on and has happened many times in the past and it will happen again in future. All of us are lucky to be born in this period when the Vedas and Upanishads are available and those who have faith are available; those who are in this tradition are still available (sampradaya). The greatest blessing is we have Adi Shankaracharya ji’s bhasya available on the 10 main Upanishads, on Brahma Sutras and on Bhagavad Gita.
Now we will see the beauty of his bhasya while studying the Upanishads. His bhasyas, also like the Vedas are free from inconsistencies. Hanuman ji is the avatar of Lord Shiva and so is Adi Shankaracharya ji. What he has written is infallible, no mistakes/ inconsistencies in his writing. But, one has to have total dedication and total surrender to Bhagwan Shankaracharya and his bhasya because a lot of misunderstandings also exist. People have written so many contradictory things and one would get confused by other writings. We need to focus our attention on Adi Shankaracharya’s bhasya in order to understand this prasthana trayi (Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita and Brahma Sutra).
There are 108 Upanishads mentioned in the Muktikopanishad. In this Upanishad there is a dialogue between Bhagawan Sri Rama and Hanuman ji. Hanuman ji asked Sri Rama “ I want to know your tattva, your Swaroopa. How can I know your Swaroopa?” Hanumanji was asking on behalf of all of us. Ramchandra ji said if you want to know my Swaroopa, you should study the Upanishads under proper guidance. Even one Upanishad is enough. Ramchandra ji mentioned Mandukya Upanishad Mandukyam eva alam mumukshunam vimuktaye.
For a mumukshu to become free, Mandukya Upanishad alone is enough but thereafter he says that if it is difficult to understand Mandukya Upanishad, you can study 10 Upanishads. Isha Kena Katha Prasna Mundaka Mandukya Tittirihi Aitraiya Chandogya and Brihandaryakam. Commentaries from Adi Shankaracharya are available only for these 10 Upanishads.
So, when we study this Upanishad with bhasya, we will gain this Brahma Vidya to make us free from samsara and it is very interesting. It is not very complex or esoteric. I want to demystify Vedanta. When we think it is mystified, esoteric and abstract, we don’t go in that direction at all. It is meant for all of us. It is not meant for someone else. Isha Upanishad is very beautiful, very sweet and enters directly to the heart. It is found in the Shukla Yajur Veda. Yajur Veda has got two portions: Shukla and Krishna. It is found in the mantras bhaga. Sometimes these Upanishads are also found in the beginning in the mantras, brahmana or aranyaka portions. Brihadaranyaka Upanishad is in the Aranyaka portion (of Shukla Yajur Veda), so this Ishavasya is in the mantra bhaga of the Shukla Yajur Veda. This Upanishad has only 18 mantras. In the beginning it gives the highest knowledge. Then it also guides us on dharma and upasanas so we can prepare ourselves to gain this knowledge.

13. Ecology: Man, and Nature are inseparable. Man, and his natural environment are inter-related and mutually interdependent. Everything in Nature contributes to our protection and nourishment. Let us, therefore, protect our natural environment. Helping in maintaining the ecological balance is our duty. It is indispensable for our safe living and highest welfare. Polluting of public places and polluting of air and water of the country is a national crime. We must make amends of our past lapses.
14. Unity: The more united the people of a country, the greater is their ability to withstand all obstacles and dangers. United we stand, divided we fall. This is particularly true about today’s India. Therefore, let us live in close harmony and loving goodwill with all our countrymen. Love of our country means love of our countrymen. This is the most invaluable service a Citizen of India, can offer to our Motherland.
