Our Children, Our Future -6. Swami Chinmayananda

Image
27/01/2017. Read carefully, know how important are our children, making a good citizen to the future is more valuable than making money, as children are our future .. .. 6.1 It is that child who, as soon as he was born and brought back to the palace, became the great Prahlada! Though nobody taught him in this world, he was convinced of the higher values of life. His father was only anxious that he should become another Hiranyakashipu, but because of the pre-natal spiritual training, that one solitary little baby stood against the entire materialistic culture that was developing in the country at that time. He brought the country back again to the healthier and eternal values of the Upanishads. 6.2 But what is pre-natal education that mothers are giving their children today? Cinema, Video, those stupid big books, Hotel, Airport! These are the ideals you are feeding the children and when they come out as rakshasas you say, the children have gone astray! We don’t u

27/01/2017. 3. Seeing God everywhere 1. MASTER: "But this is not possible without intense love of God.  One sees nothing but God everywhere when one loves Him with great intensity.  It is like a person with jaundice, who sees everything yellow.   1.1. Then one feels, 'I am verily He'. 1.2. "A drunkard, deeply intoxicated, says, 'Verily I am Kali!' The gopis, intoxicated with love, exclaimed, 'Verily I am Krishna!' 2.1 "One who thinks of God, day and night, beholds Him everywhere.  It is like a man's seeing flames on all sides after he has gazed fixedly at one flame for some time." 2.2. "But that isn't the real flame", flashed through M.'s mind. 3.1 Sri Ramakrishna, who could read a man's inmost thought, said: "One doesn't lose consciousness by thinking of Him who is all Spirit, all Consciousness. 3.2. Shivanath once remarked that too much thinking about God confounds the brain.

From 'Letters from Sri Ramanasramam', Letter 159. - Sri Ramana Maharishi

27/01/2017. This afternoon, a devotee asked , “Swami, for gaining Realization, is the enquiry ‘Who am I?’ the only way?” Sri Ramana Maharishi   answered him: 1. “Enquiry is not the only way. If one does spiritual practice (sadhana) with name and form, repetition of holy names (japa), or any of these methods with grim determination and perseverance, one becomes THAT. 2. According to the capacity of each individual, one spiritual practice is said to be better than another and several shades and variations of them have been given. 3. Some people are a long way from Tiruvannamalai, some are very near; some are in Tiruvannamalai, while some get into Bhagavan’s hall itself. 4. For those who come into the hall, it is enough, if they are told as they step in, ‘Here is the Maharshi’, and they realize him immediately. 5. For others they have to be told which route to take, which trains to catch, where to change, which road to turn into. 6. In like manner, the particular

No. 20.5 Even an attempt at the realisation of the Self raises you to Brahmaloka. Actual realisation takes you beyond sorrow, once for all; Tarati Shokam Atmavit. 20.6 Such a man becomes Brahman Himself : Brahmavit Brahmaiva Bhavati. 20.7 He enables others to cross the ocean of Samsara : Sa Tarati sa Lokan Tarayati. 20.8 All sorrows are banished from you even when you think of the Atman : Aham atma Nirakarah Sarvavyapi Swabhavatah. 27/01/2017. (Delivered at the Home of Truth, Los Angeles, California ) 8.1 "Fifty years ago," said Ingersoll to me, "you would have been hanged in this country if you had come to preach. You would have been burnt alive or you would have been stoned out of the villages." 8.2 So there is nothing unreasonable in the supposition that civilisation existed fourteen hundred years before Christ. It is not yet settled whether civilisation has always come from the lower to the higher. 8.3 The same arguments and proofs that have been brought forward to prove this proposition can also be used to demonstrate that the savage is only a degraded civilised man. 8.4 The people of China, for instance, can never believe that civilisation sprang from a savage state, because the contrary is within their experience. 8.5 But when you talk of the civilisation of America, what you mean is the perpetuity and the growth of your own race. 27/01/2017. Chapter 1.1 Discussion among Narada, Sanaka and Others… Questions by Sage Saunaka to Sri Suta In the forest of Naimisharanya, knowing about the onset of Kali Yuga, numerous sages had gathered under the leadership of Sage Saunaka to perform a thousand year Yagam to Lord Vishnu and to listen to stories about the Lord. Yagam means the sacrifice of animalistic tendancies in our minds so as to attain divinity. (Note – Naimisharanya is the place where disintegration takes place moment by moment. That is, our body itself where cells die every moment). There Sage Saunaka asked some important questions to Sri Suta (Ugrashravas, the son of Romaharshana and a disciple of Vyasa Deva). He requested Sri Suta to talk about the pastimes of Lord Krishna, which are like sweet nectar to the ears. To be continued ...

Another way of honouring Lakshmi and worshipping her, is that no harsh word, no rude speech, no hard utterance should ever cross the holy lips of the presiding deity of the Hindu home, for graciousness and sweetness are part and parcel of the Hindu concept of the Grihalakshmi. 2. Another custom which is not properly understood, is the adornment of the Grihalakshmi with two important things, besides the Mangala Sutra (the marriage string with black beads woven into gold, worn around the neck). 3. These are flowers and the Tilak (vermillion mark on the forehead). 4. A Hindu woman should never go without the Tilak. 5. There is a special significance and a deep reason for the wearing of a sizeable Tilak upon the forehead. 6. There is a real necessity for this Tilak both from the subjective point of view of the lady wearing it, as

Unravelling the Knot of Life’s Difficulty: Sri Aurobindo

27/01/2017. 1. The integral Yoga is based on the standpoint of the divine consciousness, and therefore takes a different view of human life and development than the ideals of perfection that start from the individual human standpoint. The ideal of the integral Yoga is to effect a transformation of being from human to divine. Sri Aurobindo notes: “Essentially then this divine self-perfection is a conversion of the human into a likeness of and a fundamental oneness with the divine nature, a rapid shaping of the image of God in man and filling in of its ideal outlines.” 2. The difficulty comes when the human seeker attempts to understand and implement a process to effect this conversion of the consciousness and the actions of life. Sri Aurobindo addresses this issue by suggesting that it is essential for us to gain a somewhat detailed understanding of the complex mechanisms of mind, life and body and their interaction within the functioning of the human being. “To perceive and h

He felt that if even one Hiranyakashipu was to great a threat to the good values of life, what would happen if every child growing up in that land wanted to be another Hiranyakashipu. a.3. Therefore, he collected all the pregnant ladies and took them to heaven where in that new atmosphere the children could be molded to become better people; the genes had gotten so bad that they had to be revitalized. b.1. At that time, Devarishi Narada came along and in order to try his own experiment he requested to be given only one specimen – one pregnant lady – the queen of Hiranyakashipu. b.2. Be as you are- Sri Ramana Maharishi

20/01/2017. If there is a goal to be reached it cannot be permanent. The goal must already be there. We seek to reach the goal with the ego, but the goal exists before the ego. What is in the goal is even prior to our birth, that is, to the birth of the ego. Because we exist the ego appears to exist too. If we look on the Self as the ego then we become the ego, if as the mind we become the mind, if as the body we become the body. It is the thought which builds up sheaths in so many ways. The shadow on the water is found to be shaking. Can anyone stop the shaking of the shadow? If it would cease to shake you would not notice the water but only the light. Similarly take no notice of the ego and its activities, but see only the light behind. The ego is the thought ‘I’. The true ‘I’ is the Self. To be continued ..

Now, coming back to the practical. 2. The subject of the practical application of psychology has been taken up in India from very early times. 3. About fourteen hundred years before Christ, there flourished in India a great philosopher, Patanjali by name. 4. He collected all the facts, evidences, and researches in psychology and took advantage of all the experiences accumulated in the past. 5. Remember, this world is very old; it was not created only two or three thousand years ago. 6. It is taught here in the West that society began eighteen hundred years ago, with the New Testament. 7. This contains the story of Bhakti Devi and her two dying sons Jnanam (Knowledge) and Vairagyam (Renunciation), which means observation (jnanam), devotion (bhakti) and engagement (dispassion or vairagyam); developing these qualities is the easiest way for getting out of our ignorance and defects. 4.1 Bhagavatha Mahatmyam is of great significance since it gives valuable instruction as to how Bhakti or devotion can be revived in this Kali Yuga through the recital and study of the Bhagavatham. Bhakti is the only means of attaining freedom from the bondage of this material world and its various concerns. Bhagavatha Mahatmyam al

20/01/2017. 1. People have begun to ask: “Where is God?” He is everywhere. It is absurd to ask for proof of the existence of God. Who created the mind with its several faculties? Who pumps blood in your heart? Who causes the peristaltic movements? He is the All-pervading Essence. He is hidden in all these things, like oil in the sesame seed, like butter in milk, like electricity in the wires. God is Swatah-Siddha. The mother says: “Here is your father”—you don’t ask her for further proof. Similarly, you will have to repose faith in the words of the scriptures and the sages. God is everywhere; He is in the Light, in the Sun, in the Moon, in the Stars, in every speck of creation. 2.     He who is sincere, who has aspiration, he will realise God. Every man is selfish. Therefore, Shastras say that you must do charity. By charity you purify yourself and you recognise the all-pervading Atman. You grow in unity and oneness. Charity gives rise to knowl

Do we call it a political problem? Yes, naturally it is. Our encounter with the problems of life is a political problem in one sense, and it is another type of problem from another angle of vision. It is a philosophic problem; it is a problem that arises out of our location in this world itself, and the understanding of the nature of this location of man in the world is the point at which people are at loggerheads, calling themselves philosophers, calling themselves theologians, calling themselves priests and pundits, teachers, prophets, and social welfare workers. All these nomenclatures are the designations of the various dramatic personae in this tremendous enactment of the total picture of human encounter with nature in its completeness. 2. Hers is the power that is unsurpassed in the whole world. To the Grihalakshmi in her sphere of the home, the husband or the Patidev is what to the Sadhaka and the seeker in the spiritual life the Guru is. Moving Beyond the Mundane Ideal of Self-Perfection - Sri Aurobindo

20/01/2017. There is a second stage to the process of the integral Yoga of self-perfection. Simply developing and upgrading the powers of mind, life and body is insufficient and only really addresses the external or mundane ideals without addressing the underlying truths that stand behind the religious and spiritual ideals of perfection. Sri Aurobindo notes: “The second stage of this Yoga will therefore be a persistent giving up of all the action of the nature into the hands of this greater Power, a substitution of its influence, possession and working for the personal effort, until the Divine to whom we aspire becomes the direct master of the Yoga and effects the entire spiritual and ideal conversion of the being.” Without such an intervention from outside, we remain bound within the limits of the outer nature. Sri Aurobindo explains: “The mundane ideal regards man always as a mental, vital and physical being and it aims at a human perfection well within these limits, a perfe

Then Bhagavan slowly and majestically walked over to the almirah and immediately pulled out the book he had asked me to find. He closed the almirah and, to my surprise, instead of walking back to the couch, came and sat on the floor right next to me. 3.  He opened the book and holding it before my face, asked me to read the particular passage. Bhagavan’s attendants used to tell me that his body was like a furnace. Only then, when he sat so close to me, did I understand what they meant. Therefore, we are familiar with the expression Grihalakshmi, the Mother who presides over the auspiciousness, welfare and progress of the home-life and family.  She is conceived of as the very embodiment of Goddess Lakshmi.  In the West the woman is more conceived of as the wife, an equal partner to the man, vying for privilege with him in all spheres of activity and trying to assert not only her equality but even further her personal independence.  Whereas, to the Hindu heart, woman is the mother.  It is the motherhood of the woman that is ever pres

Aspects of the Mundane Goals of Perfection of Human Existence - Sri Aurobindo

14/01/2017. 1. An overview of the various ideals and goals set by those who seek to develop and improve human life may encompass what Sri Aurobindo terms the “mundane”, essentially “secular” goals, or the religious goals. 2. The secular goals may be those relating to the improvement of society and human relationships, or those relating to the development of the powers of body, life and mind of the individuals who make up that society, or a combination that seeks to enhance the individual capabilities while developing the society at the same time. 3. Those who seek to improve human life and society focus on development of peace, harmony, equitable use of resources, etc, as Sri Aurobindo summarizes: “…a better and more efficient citizenship and discharge of duties, a better, richer, kindlier and happier way of living, with a more just and more harmonious associated enjoyment of the opportunities of existence.” 4. Then again there are those who believe that individual develo
