What is the role of Atma? What is its function in the face of adversity? :

Atma or Self gives sentiency to all inert upadhis (instruments).

It neither asks a person to do good, nor stops a person from doing bad.

This Atma which acts through the total mind is called Ishvara and when it acts through the individual mind it is called jiva.

When the jiva prays to Ishvara, he or she is guided to Self-realization (Atma Sakshatkara).

Ishvara plays the role of the Guru and leads the jiva towards righteousness and Realization.
