Humans are always led by their mind,  which in turn,  needs guidance from intelligence. Intelligence is the only agency to act on the mind,  eliminating undesirable traits and imbuing emotional strength,  stability and poise. A close integration of mind and intelligence is what makes a good leader,  who should excel in leading the mind and intelligence of his team.  In public administration,  corporate management,  manufacturing,  defence, education, sports, household or any other field, sterling leadership qualities are indispensable.  

Dedication,  competence and welfare of people, which determine the enrichment and growth of a nation, verily rest upon enlightened leadership.  Using intelligence as the tool, but fostering no special fondness or dislike for any in particular,  the leader should embrace all alike.  He should display sufficient equalness and inclusiveness, evoking participatory response from the rest.  Everyone should think of his profession in the larger social,  national and global perspective.  Productivity of any professional is a contribution to the societal pool. Unless people avail of products and services thus generated,  of what relevance and utility will such production be? A manager endowed with exemplary leadership should discuss the subject with his team to generate full-fold understanding in them. 

Only then will the mind shed its constrictions,  and imbibe wider dimensions.  Home and workplace are complementary.  Both should be viewed as equally relevant. To be devoted at home,  but not so at work,  is a dichotomy,  enfeebling domestic and professional fronts alike.  An enlightened view does not approve of remuneration as the major persuasion to work. Productivity of any employee caters to society,  employee families being its constituents. To benefit society is to enrich them as well. 

 

All public systems — roads,  schools,  colleges,  research centres,  hospitals, ports — are for the use of all.  Many public organisations cater to one segment or another of these.  Their employees should derive special satisfaction that their efforts are vital to society’s welfare and advancement. To enable such collective societal identity, special discussions or courses should be held exposing the societal nature of corporate endeavour.  An exemplary leader is concerned more with sustainable growth, beneficial to society at large.  

 

He is averse to superficial display and short-term benefits.  Cherishing integrity himself, he instils it around.  Vikramaditya, an illustrious king of the fifth century, had nine reputed scholars as advisers.  Their enlightened,  impartial,  impersonal discussions moulded the king’s insight and resolve every time. Was it not like the present brainstorming sessions? Vikamaditya ruled well, to the fulfilment and esteem of his subjects.  The Bhagwad Gita illustrates the marvellous effect of true leadership.  Even after 13 years of austere preparation, Arjuna crumbled in the battlefield, saying he would not fight the unrighteous war.  

 

Krishna disapproved of this,  terming it dishonourable and derogatory.  Arjuna,  though stunned,  reflected,  seeking necessary clarity and courage from Krishna. Their dialogue runs into 18 chapters of the Mahabharata, a historical document written about the decline and fall of the Kuru empire.  Four-and-a-half million warriors were looking mainly for Arjuna’s resolve. How immensely sensitive was the occasion, how consequential was the mission Krishna fulfilled. Krishna’s initial 22 words wiped Arjuna’s tears.  Becoming vibrant,  Partha put specific questions before Krishna. An enlightened leader’s articulation redresses mind’s resistance and clears intellect’s confusion. This is how a leader steers the mind and intelligence of those around him.

Sanatan is the set of beliefs and practices that have been followed on the Indian subcontinent for millennia. It represents the eternal laws and ways of life as evolved in Bharatvarsha. Hordes of invaders could not destroy this enduring Hindu-Vedic way of life. However, the British attempted to impose their culture through Macaulayism, which refers to the policy of introducing the English education system to British colonies.

To rule, they had to subjugate the minds of the ruled by portraying them as weak, inferior, and secondary. So, our Sanatani culture was attacked, and colonial culture was ingrained. We got independence in 1947, but our minds are still colonised, thanks to a few yet dominant Anglicised-leftist historians post-independence.

The so-called renowned historian, Romila Thapar, with her left-leaning perspectives, has played a pervasive, penetrating and pivotal role in shaping how we perceive India’s historical past and culture. Her influence over academic institutions and the official narrative of Indian history has allowed her to propagate her own agenda, often resulting in the distortion and manipulation of historical facts to serve a particular ideology and doctrine.

Thapar contends that history should be understood and interpreted without imposing present-day perspectives, assumptions, prejudices, or frameworks. This is a valid academic principle—historians should strive for objectivity, presenting historical findings and evidence based on facts. Even the modern historical research involves collecting facts and evidence to develop theories, and revisiting prevailing theories when new evidence emerges.

However, it is paradoxical that Thapar herself starts with assumptions and prejudices. The narratives put forward by Marxist historians, led by her, are often confined within a Marxist-leftist framework. Marxism views the world through the lens of “matter” and “material forces” as the primary drivers of historical change. Thapar’s interpretations are guided by this framework, which reduces religion, ideology, and social factors to mere extensions of material forces, classified into means of production and methods of production.

This perspective suggests that those who control production also control society’s ideology and other aspects. Thapar’s academic background in English literature and Indian history under AL Basham at the University of London has significantly influenced her approach to historical research. Her understanding of historical facts often relies on distorted translations of evangelist historians, primarily from a literary perspective, rather than delving into archaeological evidence.

She lacks qualifications in Sanskrit, which makes interpreting ancient Indian societies and texts challenging. Furthermore, Thapar’s interpretations often align with British theories imported from England, rather than drawing from Indian historical records. This approach has led to the dismissal of India’s unique methods of historical recording and the discounting of its significance by English historians.

She is encaged, enchained and captivated by the Marxist worldview which influences her collection and interpretation of historical facts, events, and incidents. For instance, her book From Lineage to State in Ancient India (1987), attempts to explain the transition from kin-based societies to complex administrative structures in ancient India using a Marxist framework. In this, she is influenced by Louis Althusser’s ideas, a prominent French political thinker and Marxist intellectual of the 1960s.

What’s striking is Thapar’s resistance to exploring history from new perspectives. Any new research or counter-narrative is often deemed blasphemous and contrary to the established “truth” held by leftist historians like her. In academic discourse, it is common to present multiple narratives, allowing readers to exercise their judgement when interpreting historical events.

For her, Sanatani culture is nothing but Brahmanical hegemony, which she views as exploitative and parasitic. This presupposition appears to guide her selection and interpretation of historical facts, leading her to critique anything and everything associated with Sanatani culture. Thapar’s resistance to accepting the historicity of epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, which she often categorises as mythology, has sparked controversy. Her interpretations of these stories can be misleading, and her claims about characters like Yudhisthira being inspired by Ashoka are unsupported by evidence.

Thapar’s Marxist perspective also leads her to view religion as a potential tool used by the wealthy to oppress the poor, fostering a state of false consciousness. She tends to dismiss archaeological, anthropological, paleontological, geographical, and literary evidence that contradicts her views. Her narrow ideological lens prevents her from understanding India’s deeply rooted religious and cultural ethos.

Moreover, Thapar’s assertion that India lacked a sense of nationalism before British rule is historically inaccurate. India has had a rich history of unity under various empires, long before the British arrived.

Romila Thapar’s influence on Indian history has been significant, but her perspective is deeply rooted in a Marxist framework, which distorts the understanding of historical events. It is essential to consider alternate narratives and perspectives to form a more comprehensive view of Indian history.

On 31 October 1984, the prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi's mother, Indira Gandhi, was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards, which led to violent riots against Sikhs. Sources estimate the number of Sikh deaths to be between 8,000 and 17,000. 

At a Boat Club rally 19 days after the assassination, Gandhi said, "Some riots took place in the country following the murder of Indiraji. We know the people were very angry and for a few days it seemed that India had been shaken. But, when a mighty tree falls, it is only natural that the earth around it does shake a little". 

According to Verinder Grover, the statement made by Gandhi was a "virtual justification" of the riots. Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar wrote, "Did it constitute an incitement to mass murder?" He also criticised Gandhi for his reluctance to bring the army from Meerut to handle the mob

The 1984 anti-Sikh riots, also known as the 1984 Sikh massacre, was a series of organised pogroms against Sikhs in India following the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. Government estimates project that about 2,800 Sikhs were killed in Delhi and 3,350  whilst other sources estimate the number of deaths at about 8,000–17,000. (verification needed)

The assassination of Indira Gandhi had taken place after she had ordered Operation Blue Star, a military action to secure the Golden Temple, a Sikh temple complex in Amritsar, Punjab, in June 1984. The operation had resulted in a deadly battle with armed Sikh groups who were demanding greater rights and autonomy for Punjab and the deaths of many pilgrims. Sikhs worldwide had criticized the army action and many saw it as an assault on their religion and identity.

In the aftermath of the pogroms, the government reported that 20,000 had fled the city; the People's Union for Civil Liberties reported "at least" 1,000 displaced persons. The most-affected regions were the Sikh neighborhoods of Delhi. Human rights organizations and newspapers across India believed that the massacre was organized. The collusion of political officials connected to the Indian National Congress in the violence and judicial failure to penalize the perpetrators alienated Sikhs and increased support for the Khalistan movement. The Akal Takht, Sikhism's governing body, considers the killings a genocide.

In 2011, Human Rights Watch reported that the Government of India had "yet to prosecute those responsible for the mass killings". According to the 2011 WikiLeaks cable leaks, the United States was convinced of the Indian National Congress's complicity in the riots and called it "opportunism" and "hatred" by the Congress government, of Sikhs. Although the U.S. has not identified the riots as genocide, it acknowledged that "grave human rights violations" occurred. In 2011, the burned sites of multiple Sikh killings from 1984, were discovered in Hondh-Chillar and Pataudi areas of Haryana. The Central Bureau of Investigation believes that the violence was organised with support from the Delhi police and some central-government officials.

After 34 years of delay, in December 2018, the first high-profile conviction for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots took place with the arrest of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, who was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court. Very few convictions have taken place in the pending 1984 cases, with only one death penalty conviction for an accused, Yashpal in the case of murdering Sikhs in the Mahipalpur area of Delhi.
