The first Chapter of the Bhagavad Gita highlights the undeniably important issue of ‘suffering.’ Set against this background Lord Krishna analyses the world scenario. He points out that the world is constantly changing – ever in a state of flux. It is anityam and there is nothing permanent in it. Viewed from this perspective, we can try understanding the problem of suffering and also finding its solution. In this manner He moves from the dismal to the joyous.
The 1st chapter describes the battle field of Kurukshetra with the two armies arrayed against each other. Against this backdrop Arjuna expressed a desire to physically survey the two armies. He knew all the warriors but nonetheless, he wanted a physical preview of the armies. In compliance with Arjuna’s wishes, Krishna positioned the chariot, in front of Bhishma Pitamah and Dronacharya.
The Lord had a hidden motive in doing this. Arjuna wanted to fight the war to take revenge on his enemies. There was anger and hatred in his heart. Krishna knew this. He wanted Arjuna to fight the battle but without the negativities and hatred. He knew that fighting with wrong motives, would not remove the hatred and anger from the world. Duryodhana and Arjuna were both vengeful and angry. Their fighting the war with these motives would not have eliminated disharmony from the world.
When we try to avenge a wrong done to us by wrongful means, the problem is not solved. The wrong remains in the world. Krishna was a master in psychology and a great philosopher. He knew what was happening in Arjuna’s mind. So instead of placing the chariot in front of Duryodhana or Dushyasana, he placed it in front of the Grandsire and the Teacher. Suddenly Arjuna’s anger disappeared because he had no negative feelings for either of them. He loved and revered them.
However, he became unsure of himself. His mind was confused about his duty. Standing on the battlefield face to face with death, Arjuna was confronted with the eternal question of good and bad. He realized that thousands of lives would be lost in battle. The whole balance of society would be shaken up. He was tormented with deep personal sorrow, dejection and the prospect of immeasurable human suffering that the war would unleash. This realization made him very sad and dejected. Not knowing what was right or wrong, he surrendered to the Lord. He wanted to know whether he should fight the war or retire to the forest.
It is important to understand the level of his suffering because only then can we appreciate the value of the 1st chapter of the Gita. It was a very important moment in his life. Through the depth of this immense sorrow came surrender to Lord Krishna. We have to understand the importance of suffering in our life. Only when we are able to deeply appreciate this and can we go beyond it.
To eliminate this sorrow, we must first understand what it means to us. We have to give up hiding from it or trying to escape from it or try to suppress it. It is at best faced head on and experienced. Only then will we be able to go beyond it.
We find similar instances in the life of Gautam Buddha. He also experienced immense sorrow. Siddhartha was born in a royal family with the best of everything. He had a large kingdom and was surrounded by good friends, riches, and a loving family. His father also tried to protect him from the miseries of the world.
Despite this, he felt a sense of incompleteness. Once, along with his minister, he decided to go out and see the world for himself. At the first place he saw a lot of rejoicing and enquired about the cause. His minister told him that a child was born and hence there was much elation. At another place, he saw a sick person, suffering from some disease. He enquired whether he, his wife and son would also suffer from sickness. The minister said that it was a possibility. Next, he saw an old man and on enquiry was informed that old age would take him too. At the fourth place, he saw people crying and weeping over the death of a loved one. He learnt that he and his family would also inevitably succumb to death one day.
Death is a reality that no one can escape from. Great people, small people, even the Lord Himself, when He takes avataar are not spared. Death is a great leveller and in its eyes, everyone is equal. Siddhartha realized that all living creatures are subjected to the four modifications of birth, growth and change, disease and decay and finally death. Sorrow comes to us from external sources but we also are capable of giving ourselves great suffering. He felt a great sense of futility and experienced deep spiritual sorrow. This does not come from the non-attainment of things, lack of money, or non-achievement. This sorrow comes when we realize the temporariness and impermanence of things.
As Siddhartha went along, he saw a person sitting in a meditative pose, quietly under a tree. There was great peace and tranquillity on his face. Again, he turned to the minister and inquired about him. The minister told him that the man was a seeker of the Truth having given up the lesser joys of the world to seek supreme happiness. Siddhartha was intrigued and wanted to know if he too could achieve this state. He inquired whether this could be attained by his wife, son and others. The minister assured him that this was within the grasp of anyone who desired it well enough. There and then he made the decision to give up his kingdom with all its trappings of wealth and comfort and seek this joy. He understood or experienced this deep, spiritual suffering, which takes us on the spiritual path.
On gaining enlightenment, the Buddha revealed four great Truths. Firstly, there is the existence of suffering. Secondly, there is cause for this suffering. Thirdly, the cause can be eliminated. Fourthly, meditation is one of the methods for eliminating the cause.
Expressing the same view, Guru Nanak Dev said, “Nanak dukhiya sab sansar sukhiya jena nama adhar.” The world is filled with sorrow.
Only through surrender to the Lord’s name can we end this suffering and experience peace and joy.
