Celebrating its 7th Glorious Year, Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth, Kochi marked the occasion with fervor and enthusiasm, paying tribute to the visionaries instrumental in shaping holistic education.
Dr. Radhakrishnan Pillai, Director of Chanakya International Institute of Leadership Studies, served as the chief guest, sharing valuable insights on the harmonious integration of tradition and modern learning.
Presiding over the celebration was Prof. Ajay Kapoor, the Vice-Chancellor of the University.
Prof. T. Ashokan, Registrar in charge & Dean Academics in charge, presented the University report and extended honors to the high achievers.
The festivities featured a benedictory speech by Swami Anukoolananda, Director of Chinmaya International Residential School, Coimbatore, emphasizing the significance of incorporating spiritual values into education.
Addressing the audience, Managing Trustee Dr. AppaRao Mukkamala conveyed his thoughts on the occasion.

We are seeing the Ishavasya Upanishad which is found in Shukla Yajur Veda and it begins with a beautiful shanti mantra so let us chant the shanti mantra. It is also found in Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. Bhagwan Shankaracharyaji has commented on this shanti mantra while commenting on Brihadaranyaka Upanishad.
Brihadaranyaka Upanishad has six chapters and in the fifth chapter the first mantra is this shanti mantra which we chanted. So here, Bhagawan is explaining the meaning of the shanti mantra. It is a prayer where the teacher and the student together pray for peace, for shanti (adhyatmika, adibautika and adidaivika). When we have this shanti, we can study properly we can listen, contemplate and meditate properly. Therefore, it is very important that we have peace. The giver of all the results, the controller of all this cosmos, the ruler of the entire world is Ishwara. From Ishwara only, we are praying for shanti.
This mantram is very subtle, and it indicates the highest truth in a very beautiful way. It says poornam adah means that which is not in front, that which is not directly seen refers to it as paroksha, that which is not directly seen or perceived through our senses nor inferred in any way. So that is referred to as ‘that’ supreme Brahman. That Brahman cannot be seen through the senses that Brahman cannot be inferred by any of our methods of inference. Therefore, it is referred to as ‘that’ so that is poorna. Poorna means complete, purnam is whole complete, completeness, all, it includes everything it lacks nothing. Since it includes everything, from it everything can emerge. It is the substratum of everything so that is poorna so that Brahman is referred to here as poornam adaha.
We are at present experiencing this world; this world is referred to as idam as ‘this’ all that we experience as ‘this’. ‘This’ is the world only when we look through our senses, we experience shabdha, sparsha, rupa, rasa and gandha. All this is the outer world, but we experience this world. With the help of our senses, and sense organs (ears, skin, eyes, nose, tongue), we experience the world. But these sense organs are also made from the same material which go to make the world. So, the sense organs are also part of the world. They are also experienced as idam as this. We experience whatever information we get through the sense organs with the help of our antakarana, our buddhi. But this antakarana is also part of the Prakriti only. So, from Bhagwan's Prakriti alone, the antakarana is also born. So, it is also idam that is also referred to as this. So, all this is referred to here as idam. The one who is experiencing all this is aham and all this is idam.
So here, the Upanishad says this is also poornam. This whole world, all the senses, the mind everything, all that we experience is also poorna. But there is a contradiction here. How can we say it is poorna when the senses are limited, the mind is limited, and not all pervading? The earth, the waters are limited. So, how can we say they are poorna? So, what is seen, that itself is not poorna. But, this is so because the essence which is expressing as this world is poorna. Shankaracharyaji writes that we are not talking about that which is directly seen as the direct form which we see, but the essence of it, the swaroopa of it is poorna. For example, when I show you this pot, the pot is made up of clay. So here in this example, the clay is what is referred to as the poorna means the karana. So, here the clay is seen, and the pot is also seen. In the pot, the clay exists. In this example, we can not only see the pot, but we can also see the clay. But in case of this world, the world is like a pot and that poorna Brahman is like clay. Here when we talk about the world, we can see the world, but we can't see that Brahman. But even when we don't see that Brahman, that Brahman exists in this world. So, the world is complete as Brahman, so that is complete and this is also complete as Brahman.
Let me give another example where we can see the effect, but we don't see the cause. This example will make it clearer. Let us say we have water; water is made up of hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Hydrogen is a gas, oxygen is also a gas. Hydrogen is there in the atmosphere, but we cannot see it; oxygen is also there everywhere but we can't see it. When hydrogen and oxygen atoms come together in a particular proportion (two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen), when they join together, h2o molecule is formed. This h2o molecule is water molecule only. When lots of these water molecules come together, we see it as water. So, when we look at water in front of us, we can see that water, but the water is made up of hydrogen and oxygen which we cannot see.
So, if we have to apply this mantra to that example, we can say looking at that water we can say that that we can't see hydrogen and oxygen. In fact, what we see is also hydrogen and oxygen, but it appears in a different form (vacharambanam). In the same way, that which we don't see is Brahman and this which we see as this world is also Brahman but in a different form which appears different, having as though different qualities. It appears changing, the world appears changing, the world appears limited, the world appears inert but still it is Brahman only. It is sat chit ananda Brahman, that is the meaning of these two words poornam adaha and poornam idam.
If this is understood let us go to the next words. The next mantra says: poornat poornam udachyate. Where did this world come from? from where did this world arise? So, the mantra says from poorna alone, this poorna has come. That which is seen in front of us having certain qualities, which is the effect, it is also referred to as karya Brahma. This world arose from that poorna Brahman alone. So, if this is poorna and that is also poorna, and this has come from that, then what is the difference? The difference is only in name and form. Actually, there is no difference. In the swaroopa, there is no difference.
Again, another example of gold. Gold is there and is converted into an ornament. So, before that ornament was made it was gold and now that it appears in the form of ornament, but it is also gold. So, as gold there is no difference but as a form and as a particular name, there appears to be a difference. However, that name/ form does not have a separate existence and does not have a value of its own; its value is that of gold. Similarly, that is Brahman, that supreme, transcendental Brahman which is referred to in the Upanishads as satyam jnanam anantam Brahma, that which is complete. From that Brahman alone this world appears. But when that Brahman appears like this world, when that Brahman as though becomes this world, does the Brahman change? Shankaracharyaji says no, without undergoing any change, without undergoing any modification, without becoming non-Brahman; it doesn't lose its being Brahman; it appears like this world just as gold. Gold remaining gold, it appears in the form of an ornament. Before it was an ornament, it was gold. Now, also it is gold as an ornament it appears to have something extra, but there is nothing extra there because there is nothing other than gold there; the form is also gold; the name is also gold.
This relationship between the world and Brahman has to be understood properly. So that is Brahman, and this is also Brahman and from that this has come. So, when we look at this world, what do we see? What is there? There is Brahman, plus there is name and form. But that name and form doesn't have a separate existence. It doesn't have any separate value. The value is only of Brahman. But, because of the presence of this world (means because Brahman appears in the form of this world) and also appears in the form of the seer of the world, there arises a notion of duality. Duality is actually not there because other than Brahman, nothing is there. But, because of the expression as the different forms and also the expression of seeing these different forms, there appears to be a duality. This notion of duality is the main cause of all our sorrows, pains, and troubles. They are caused by not knowing the essence and by getting involved with the appearance. So, what is the way out? That is said now in the next line?
Poornasya poornam adaye:
This world which you see is poorna and in its swaroopa, it is poorna. In the name and form it appears to be limited. And the seer of the world also creates this sense of duality which is not really there. So, from this world which we see, if we take away that Brahman or poorna, take away poorna means recognise that poorna, remove that poorna, the essence of poorna and recognise it as our own Self.
Shankaracharyaji again likes to make it clear. If you take out the poornatva, that completeness means what? Recognise that swaroopa, understand that it is one through proper knowledge recognise that Brahman tattva. Remove the notion of duality from the mind (that there is something other than that other than Brahma) this is just a notion, a misunderstanding due to avidya. When we remove this notion, neglect this notion, and recognize that poorna as not different from our own Self, recognise that then that poorna alone will remain.
Let me give that example of gold again. When the gold is converted into a beautiful ornament, when we look at the ornament, it has got a beautiful form, it has got a beautiful name. Let us say a necklace,with a fantastic design. So, when somebody shows that to me, I say it is a necklace; it has got such a lovely form. The necklace is made up of gold. From the standpoint of gold which is this swaroopa of that necklace, there is nothing other than gold. So, from gold alone that necklace has come. So let us say you take a little piece of that necklace, what do you get in your hand? Gold. Then you take another piece, what do you have? Gold. So, keep on taking little, little pieces from that necklace what do you have in your hand? Gold. When all this gold is removed from that necklace, what remains? Gold alone remains. In the same way, when we take away that world as a separate entity, with our thinking, with our understanding, when we recognize that Brahma and hold on to that Brahma, then what will remain? Brahma alone will remain because other than Brahma nothing is there. There will be absence of everything other than Brahma.
I hope you understood. Let me repeat. The mantra says poornam adah. So, the mantra is talking to us only; the sastras are talking to us we are experiencing this world. The sastra says no doubt you are seeing this world but there is something which you are not seeing, that is poorna. While looking at this world, in the world itself that is born that karana is there, that cause is there. Of this world which is poorna and this what is appearing in front of us as this world is also poorna. That poorna which is unseen alone is appearing as this poorna. For example, a person is there, say your friend. He comes to your home wearing a mask, not only this little mask but the entire face. So, when you look at him you don't recognise him. He speaks and from his voice you recognise that person. So, you know that what I am seeing as a mask appearing totally different, is really my friend. When he removes that mask, I recognise him completely. There remains no confusion.
In the same way the world which we see, the cause of this world, the swaroopa of this world is Brahman that poorna Brahman. So adaha poornam, idam poornam. This world has come from that Brahman. But when it comes from that Brahman, when we see this world, when we see the differences in this world, when we experience this world not recognizing that Brahman, we experience duality, we experience difference, multiplicity. Because of this ignorance, we suffer. So, with the help of the shastras, when we come to understand things properly, we come to recognise that Brahman as our own self. We take away that Brahman from this world, we take the essence of this world, that is called Poornam adaya. Take that poorna from this world, leave away the name and form pick up that poorna as your own self. Then what will remain is that poorna alone because other than that, nothing is there.
So, this is a very subtle mantra which conveys the very essence of the teaching of the Upanishad and it is mentioned here in the beginning itself. So, briefly we have seen the meaning of this mantra so keep it in mind. Whenever we chant this mantra, let the meaning come in your mind.

12. Ahimsa: Non-injury is our highest virtue (Ahimsa Paramo Dharmah). Compassion is a divine quality. Protection of animals is our sacred duty. This is India’s special teaching. Let us be compassionate towards all creatures. Thus, be a true Indian. Try to become an embodiment of kindness compassion and goodness in your everyday life.
13. Ecology: Man, and Nature are inseparable. Man, and his natural environment are inter-related and mutually interdependent. Everything in Nature contributes to our protection and nourishment. Let us, therefore, protect our natural environment. Helping in maintaining the ecological balance is our duty. It is indispensable for our safe living and highest welfare. Polluting of public places and polluting of air and water of the country is a national crime. We must make amends of our past lapses.
14. Unity: The more united the people of a country, the greater is their ability to withstand all obstacles and dangers. United we stand, divided we fall. This is particularly true about today’s India. Therefore, let us live in close harmony and loving goodwill with all our countrymen. Love of our country means love of our countrymen. This is the most invaluable service a Citizen of India, can offer to our Motherland.
15. Education: The process of education should incorporate within it the imparting of the basic knowledge of India’s great culture, its lofty ideals and noble values and principles of living. Our education has to be oriented for enriching and enhancing the quality of life of our youth and students.
